Microsoft Purview for AI without E5: what are the options?

Microsoft Purview's AI features without E5 are now within reach. Business Premium firms can add the Microsoft Purview Suite add-on built for Business Premium, which includes the AI controls, instead of moving everyone to full E5. A third route is a separate tool that only watches what staff send to AI sites. The right choice depends on whether you want the wider Microsoft compliance kit or just want client data kept out of AI.

The licensing gap

Purview is Microsoft's set of data protection tools. Some parts come with most business plans. The AI parts do not.

Purview's Data Security Posture Management for AI (DSPM for AI) is the main one. It shows what people share with AI tools. It needs a Microsoft 365 E5 or E5 Compliance licence, or an equivalent add-on, according to Microsoft's Zero Trust Assessment workshop guidance.

The older AI Hub was gated the same way. Microsoft Message Center notice MC847878 confirms AI Hub access is limited to tenants with a Microsoft E5 licence or a Microsoft 365 E5 Compliance licence.

Communication Compliance is another. It reviews messages for policy problems. It now covers AI-generated content as well, as the CIAOPS blog notes. It sits in the E5 and Purview Suite tier too.

What Business Premium already gives you

Quite a lot. On Business Premium alone you get core Purview features. That includes sensitivity labels and data loss prevention rules. AI-specific features such as content capture and insider risk analytics still need the add-on or E5.

So before you buy anything, you can:

  • Label sensitive files. Mark client folders as confidential so rules can act on them.
  • Set sharing rules. Stop labelled files leaving by email or link.
  • Write an AI policy. Say which tools are approved and on which plans.
  • Check which AI tools are in use. Our guide on finding out which AI tools staff are using covers free ways to do this.
  • Train people. Show what to take out before pasting.

The limit is the paste itself. A rule built for files and email will not see Tom pasting a client's bank details into a chatbot.

Rule of thumb: Business Premium protects files and email well. It does not watch what is typed or pasted into an AI site.

Option 1: the Purview Suite add-on for Business Premium

This is the cheapest route inside Microsoft. A Microsoft employee confirmed on Microsoft Q&A that DSPM for AI is included in the Purview Suite add-on built for Business Premium. Business Premium tenants no longer need a full E5 upgrade to reach it.

Do not confuse it with the enterprise version. The standard Microsoft Purview Suite add-on is listed at $12.00 per user a month, paid yearly, on Microsoft Purview Pricing. That one needs Microsoft 365 E3, or Office 365 E3 plus Enterprise Mobility + Security E3, first. Ask your IT provider for the current price of the Business Premium version.

Good fit if you want the full compliance kit: records, audit, insider risk and AI insight in one place. Expect setup work. Purview is powerful and takes time to configure well.

Option 2: smaller add-ons or full E5

Some firms only want part of the bundle. Microsoft sells smaller add-ons. O365HQ lists M365 E5 Information Protection and Governance at $84.00 per user per year. Separate eDiscovery and Audit, and Insider Risk Management mini-suites are listed together at $228.00 per user per year on the September 2026 price sheet. These are mostly sold for E3 tenants.

Full E5 is the other end. Microsoft 365 E5 is listed at $60.00 per user a month, paid yearly. It makes sense when you also want the enterprise security tools, not just the AI features. For a ten-person practice, that is rarely the reason to upgrade.

Option 3: a separate tool for AI sites

These tools sit in the browser. They check what is pasted, sent or uploaded on AI sites before it goes. Some block. Some take sensitive items out and let the question still go through.

They suit firms whose real worry is narrow: client data ending up in ChatGPT. They also cover tools Microsoft does not run, such as DeepSeek or Claude. Most are quicker to set up than Purview. They do not replace labels, retention or eDiscovery.

Upgrade or add a tool?

If you…Lean towards
Need audit, records and insider risk as well as AIPurview Suite add-on
Want enterprise security across the boardFull E5
Mainly want client data kept out of AI chatsA separate AI tool
Have no IT help to configure PurviewA separate AI tool

Many firms do both. Business Premium covers files and email. A small tool covers the AI sites.

Where Helio Guard fits

Helio Guard is the third option. An agent on each Windows PC adds a Chrome and Edge extension. It checks pastes, messages and uploads on listed AI sites. Card numbers, UK bank details, NI numbers and client names are taken out or swapped for a stand-in such as "Client A". Checked on the PC with fixed rules. We never see what your team types. It is Windows only. For IT providers and their clients it is £1 a person a month, from 5 people, as shown on our pricing page.

Common questions about Purview AI without E5

Can I get DSPM for AI on Business Premium?

DSPM for AI is available to Business Premium tenants through the Microsoft Purview Suite add-on built for Business Premium. Microsoft confirmed this on its Q&A forum in March 2026. Business Premium on its own, without the add-on, does not include DSPM for AI or the other AI-specific Purview features.

Does Purview DLP on Business Premium stop pastes into ChatGPT?

Purview data loss prevention on Business Premium is built mainly around files, email and sharing. AI-specific features such as content capture of AI prompts need the compliance add-on or E5. Without those, a firm should not rely on Business Premium alone to catch client data pasted into ChatGPT.

Is full E5 worth it just for AI controls?

Full Microsoft 365 E5 is listed at $60.00 per user a month, paid yearly. For a small firm that only wants AI controls, that is usually more than needed. The Purview Suite add-on for Business Premium or a dedicated AI tool covers AI risk at a lower cost.
